Herpetofaunal List for Mesoamerica
14 December 2024
The Mesoamerican Herpetology Taxonomic Board (TB) is maintaining a running inventory of the native herpetofauna of Mexico and Central America, based primarily on or updated from the following: Wilson, L. D., V. Mata-Silva, and J. D. Johnson. 2013. A conservation reassessment of the reptiles of Mexico based on the EVS measure. Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 7: 1–47; Wilson, L. D., J. D. Johnson, and V. Mata-Silva. 2013. A conservation reassessment of the amphibians of Mexico based on the EVS measure. Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 7: 97–127, and Johnson, J. D., V. Mata-Silva, and L. D. Wilson. 2015. A conservation reassessment of the herpetofauna of Central America based on the EVS measure. Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 9: 1–94. García-Padillam E., D. L. DeSantis. A. Rocha, V. Mata-Silva, J. D. Johnson, and D. L. D. Wilson. 2020. Conserving the Mesoamerican herpetofauna: the most critical case of the priority level one endemic species. Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 14(2) [General Section]: 73–131 (e240). The list is current to the date indicated above. Please note that information on several taxonomic controversial issues appears in the Johnson et al. (2015) paper, as follows: Trachemys in Central America; taxonomy of Chelonia mydas; status of Cryptochelys; Staurotypinae vs. Staurotypidae; single genus vs. multiple genera approaches to anole classification; and Coluber vs. Masticophis. In the future, the TB will be providing more updates on taxonomic changes, and other “comments” for taxa where taxonomic problems exist. The TB invites comments from users.
The numbers in parentheses following the individual species are based on a system of distributional categories devised by Wilson, L. D., J. D. Johnson, L. W. Porras, V. Mata-Silva, and E. García-Padilla. 2017. Mesoamerican Herpetology 4: 902–914. The numbers refer to the following categories: (1) MXEN (species endemic to Mexico; (2) CAEN (species endemic to Central America); (3) MXUS (species distributed only in Mexico and the United States [except for a few also found in Canada]); (4) MXCA (species found only in Mexico and Central America [exceptfor one species also found in the Antilles]); (5) CASA (species distributed only in Central America and South America); (6) MXSA (species ranging from Mexico to South America); (7) USCA (species ranging from the United States to Central America [except for a few also found in the Antilles]); (8) USSA (species ranging from the United States to South America); and (9) OCEA (Oceanic species).
Taxonomic Comments
A paper by Barrio-Amorós (2019) on the genus Leptodeira, with an emphasis on Costa Rican species (IRCF Reptiles & Amphibians 26:1–15), summarized the taxonomy of this group of snakes and purported to clarify the status of several taxa since the publication of Duellman’s classic monograph (1958; Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 114: 1–152). Outstanding taxonomic issues involve Duellman's annulata and septentrionalis groups, which in recent years primarily have undergone changes in the elevation of subspecies to species level. Barrio-Amorós’ focus was in attempting to distinguish the species in the two aforementioned groups inhabiting Costa Rica, and he recognized them as L. rhombifera and L. ornata, respectively. Unfortunately, Barrios-Amorós’ effort to distinguish these two taxa (Fig. 1, and elsewhere on p. 2) is confusing with respect to his use of the descriptive scale shape terminology, and the information on scale shape differences between L. rhombifera and L. ornata are reversed when comparing the figure legend and the text. Given the importance of clarifying the distinction between the taxa in the annulata and septentrionalis groups throughout their respective ranges, and the author’s failure to adequately distinguish the taxa in these two groups occurring in Costa Rica, as well as the required changes that would affect the distributional categorizations on the list below, the Mesoamerican Herpetology Taxonomic Board decided not to undertake these changes at this time.
Campbell et al. (2019: Revista Latinoamericana de Herpetología, Vol. 02 No. 02) restricted the genus Atropoides to A. picadoi, and placed the former members of this genus (indomitus, mexicanus, nummifer, occiduus, and olmec) in the new genus Metlapilcoatlus.
In a study of nasal horns in the genus Iguana by Breuil et al. (2019; Zootaxa 4608 [2]: 201–232), the authors presented morphological, molecular, and biological data that considered the horned iguanas from Central America as a full species (I. rhinolopha); this taxon is distinguished from other members of the genus by its unique arrangement of nasal horns, in addition to numerous other morphological and genetic characters. Nevertheless, the distributional boundaries of populations from Lower Central America and northwestern South America require further study.
A study by Velasco-Reyes et al. (Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 147 [2020] 106770) examined lineage diversity in the Micrurus diastema species complex, and out of 13 species (and their respective subspecies), their analyses suggested a reduction to 10 species (with no subspecies), in addition to one undescribed species. A number of populations or lineages remained largely unsampled (or sparsely sampled) in this study, leading the authors to conclude that future investigations are necessary to determine their corresponding species boundaries. Accordingly, because M. stuarti was not included in their analyses, perhaps because of the lack of genetic material, we chose to maintain this species in our Taxonomic List.
The systematics of the Lampropeltis triangulum complex has undergone dramatic changes since the classic treatment of this group by Kenneth L. Williams appeared in two editions of the book Systematics and Natural History of the American Milksnake, Lampropeltis triangulum" (1978, 1988). Williams' work was entrenched firmly in the "era of subspecies." Ultimately, Williams recognized 25 subspecies, at that time a record number for a snake inhabiting the Western Hemisphere. A quarter of a century passed before a major reassessment of the systematics of this complex appeared (Ruane et al., 2014). In this study, the authors elevated seven groups within this widespread and diverse complex to species level. These species, listed approximately from north to west, and then southward, are L. triangulum, L. elapsoides, L. gentilis, L. annulata, L. polyzona, L. abnorma, and L. micropholis. This treatment held sway until another major study (Chambers and Hillis, 2020) appeared, which significantly reduced the number of species-level taxa to three (L. triangulum, L. elapsoides, and L. polyzona). Chambers and Hillis (2020 took issue with the methodological approach of Ruane et al. (2014), which they maintained let to an over-splitting of this geographically widespread complex. Thus, in essentially a 25-year period this complex went from being viewed as a single polytypic species, to a complex composed of seven species, to one consisting of three species: L. triangulum (containing the taxa L. triangulum, L. gentilis, and L. annulata of Ruane et al., 2014); L. elapsoides (containing the taxon L. elapsoides of Ruane et al., 2014); and L. polyzona (containing the taxa L. polyzona, L. abnorma, and L. micropholis of Ruane et al., 2014). In our opinion, and based on comments we have received, in view of the extremely high level of variation exhibited by this complex of snakes, including size and proportions and other morphological characteristics, as well as numerous aspects of their biology and natural history, we believe that the reduction of this complex to three species requires additional studies to complement the molecular approaches. For the purposes of this list, however, we are following the conclusions of Chambers and Hillis (2020), and await future studies that hopefully will continue to elucidate the biological relationships among this extraordinarily interesting (and diverse) group of snakes.
Jadin et al. (2020; Organisms, Diversity & Evolution [Springer]) used a multilocus molecular dataset to conduct systematic analyses to assess the evolutionary history of the genus Oxybelis, and found three major lineages within this group (the O. aeneus complex, O. brevirostris, and the O. fulgidus complex). They noted that the distribution of O. aeneus apparently is restricted to the Amazon Basin, and that this formerly wide-ranging taxon likely consists of five unrecognized taxa. In addition to molecular analyses, these authors also used morphological data to remove O. micropthalmus, O. potosiensis, and Dryophis aeneus from the synonymy of O. aeneus, and elevated two of these taxa to species level; they also described two new species of Oxybelis (one from Mesoamerica). Furthermore, they also found strong support that O. brevirostris is sister to the O. aeneus complex, and weak support for the distinction of O. wilsoni from O. fulgidus from Central America. Although their analyses showed weak support for the distinction of O. wilsoni from O. fulgidus, the former taxon is an insular form that differs from all species of Oxybelis by its tan to golden-yellow coloration, a higher number of subcaudals, as well as other details of color and scutellation; this species is closely related to O. fulgidus, and possibly derived from a fulgidus-like ancestor (see commentary and photograph of a live individual in The Reptile Database). For these reasons, for the present time we chose to maintain O. wilsoni on this list.
In a phylogeny-based paper revising the taxonomy of the Hyalinobatrachium fleishmanni complex (Mendoza-Henao et al. [2020]: Systematics and Biodiversity 0[0]: 1–21]) supported the recognition of at least three species within the name H. fleischmanni species complex, with H. fleischmanni sensu stricto supported for polulations from Costa Rica to eastern Honduras and H. tatayoi corresponding to southern lineages in Costa Rica and South America. Populations from southern Mexico and Guatemala represented a third species, which the authors assigned to H. viridissimum comb. nov. A divergent lineage from western and central Honduras was tentatively assigned to H. viridissimum.
In a genetic and morphological study of Sceloporus subniger, a bunchgrass lizard distributed across pine-oak forests in central Mexico, Bryson, Jr. et al. (2021; Zootaxa 4963 [2]: 335–353) obtained data supporting the previous notion that S. subniger indeed is a composite of distinct species, and described two new species, S. dixoni and S. hesperus.
Ramírez-Reyes et al. (Zoologica Scripta [2021] 00: 1–14) conducted a genomic assessment of the Phyllodactylus tuberculosus complex and recovered three main clades within the polyphyletic P. tuberculosus. They concluded that the distribution of P. tuberculosus is restricted to Central America, elevated the subspecies magnus (occurring in the southern Pacific lowlands of Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, Mexico) to species status, and commented on lineages of P. saxatilis. Lastly, they noted that greater population and genomic sampling is required to determine the relationships among insular and continental taxa in northwestern Mexico.
Schools and Hedges (Zootaxa [2021] 4974 (2): 201–257) conducted molecular and morphological analyses of the family Diploglossidae (distributed in Mesoamerica, South America, and Caribbean islands) and concluded that the widely distributed gerera Celestus Gray, 1839 and Diploglossus Eiegmann, 1834 are paraphyletic. They assigned Mesoamerican species formerly placed in Celestus and Diploglossus to Advenus gen. nov., Mesoamericus gen. nov., and Siderolamprus Cope, 1861. Their data also indicate many undescribed species in the family of lizards. In the list below we did not include the taxon Siderolamprus owenii based on the fact that its distribution remains unknown.
Grünwald et al. (Herpetozoa 34: 233–257 [2021]) described two new species of Tropidodipsas (Dipsadidae) related to the T. fasciata species group (as defined by Kofron [1987]) from southern Mexico, based on supporting morphological and molecular data. Additionally, these authors discussed other taxonomic changes based on their phylogeny, including changes at the generic level for three species and the elevation of a subspecies to a full species, as well as conservation priorities for the new species. The new combinations are as follows: Tropidodipsas annulifera = Geophis annulifera; Tropidodipsas sartorii = Geophis sartorii; and Sibon sanniolus = Geophis sanniolus.
Using Integrative taxonomy, a study by M. Escalona et al. (2021; Zootaxa.4981.3.1) revealed a new but common Neotropical frog (Boana platanera), which was hidden under the name B. xerophylla).
Vesely and Batista (2021; Zoological Research 42:272–279) described Atelopus fronterizo from the Darién Mountains in NE Panama and NW Colombia, as well as from eastern Panamanian montane forests and Chocó-Darién moist forests.
In a recent study on hidden diversity on the polytypic species Sceloporus torquatus, using an inegrative approach, Campillo-García et al. (2021;Vertebrate Zoology 71 781–798) presented evidence for eight lineages within this complex, and in addition to the nominate form (S. torquatus), elevated several subspecies (melanogaster, binolularis, mikeprestoni, madrensis) to species level. Additional changes to this complex are expected in the near future.
Arenas-Moreno et al. (2021; Zootaxa 4949 [1] 115–130) described Lepidophyma lusca from the Huasteca Potosina region of Mexico, which previously was confused with L. gaigei. In addition to physiological characteristics, molecular and morphological data support the independent status of this new species.
Grünwald et al. (Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 15: 289–310 [2021]) described a new species of Geophis in the speciose dubius group of this large genus, from the mountains of west-central Veracruz, Mexico. The new species, G. cansecoi, was named on the basis of color pattern and scutellational features, in addition to molecular characteristics. The color pattern consists of crimson and red lateral stripes along the lower lateral portion of the body, which delimit a slate gray middorsal band; this character is unique in the genus. The authors also resurrected the often-synonymized G. fuscus, which brings the number of species in the dubius group to 14 and the number in the genus to 52.
Palacios-Aguilar et al. (2021; Journal of Natural History 55: 47–48, 2985–2997) conducted a study of Geophis laticollaris and G. russatus, which were described based only on their holotypes, but since that time fieldwork in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, Mexico, yielded a few more specimens of each taxon in museum collections. The authors conducted a review of the taxonomic status of G. russatus based on scutellation, color pattern, maxillary, and hemipenial characters, as well as sequences of a fragment of the cyt-b mitochondrial gene, and concluded that G. russatus is a color morph and a junior synonymn of G. laticollaris.
Mebert et al. (Zookeys 108: 1–34 [2022]) described Pristimantis gretathunbergae in honor of the young Swedish climate activist, on the basis of material from several mountain ranges in eastern and central Panama. The new species was recognized on the basis of "substsntial and morphological character differences (pg. 1)" and is placed as "a sister species to the allopatric P. erythropleura-penelopus group from northern Colombia (p. 1)."
García-Vázques et al. (2022; Ichthyology & Herpetology 110 [1]: 33–39 described a new arboreal species of Abronia from the Sierra de Zongolica in west-central Veracruz, Mexico. Abronia zongolica sp. nov. is diagnosable from its congeners by several morphological characters. Although this species is sympatric with A. graminea, the genomic data assigns it to the oaxacae group, as a sister species of A. oaxacae.
The genus Eleutherodactylus, subgenus Syrrhophus, has undergone a complex taxonomic history. Because of the conservative morphology of these frogs, their phylogenetic relationships have not been resolved. For these reasons, Hernández-Austria (2022; Systematics and Biodiversity 20 [1]: 2014597) presented a near-complete phylogenetic hypothesis based on mitochondrial data, employing maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. Based on these data, these authors described a new species (Eleutherodactylus potosiensis sp. nov.) from the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and also resurrected E. rubrimaculatus from synonymy.
Flores-Villela et al. (Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad 93 [2022]: e933933) described Rena klauberi sp. nov from northern Jalisco, Mexico, which represents an isolated member of the R. dulcis group. They also redefined the R. dulcis and R. humilis within the genus Rena, and discussed the status of the other species allocated to these groups.
Nieto-Montes de Oca et al. (2022; Herpetologica 78 [1], Pp. 40–50) described Xenosaurus manipulus sp. nov. from the Sierra de Juárez de Oaxaca, Mexico. Previously, this species had been identified as a distinct and undescribed lineage in phylogenetic molecular studies, but in this study it was found to differ from all its congeners by a unique combination of scalation and color-pattern characters. Furthermore, this taxon is georaphically isolated, and its distribution appears limited to the vicinity of the type locality.
In a paper on cryptic diversity in Neotropical rattlesnakes, Carbajal-Márquez et al. (2020; Zootaxa 4729: 451–481) used DNA sequence data from three mitochondrial and one nuclear gene, as well as morphological evidence, to describe two new species within this group from Mexico (Crotalus ehecatl and C. mictlantecuhtli). Recently, however Reyes-Velasco et al. (2022; Revista Méxicana de Herpetología; Vol. 5 No. 01) reanalyzed the previously published mitochondrial and nuclear data to test if isolation by distance (and not speciation) could be responsible for the genetic variation in previous studies. By using a newly developed species delimitation analysis, their results supported the validity of C. mictlantecuhtli but not C. ehecatl.
Pérez-Ramos and Luja-Molina (2022; Revista de Zoología 34: 19–41) described two new species of Rana (R. cora and R. floresi) from western Mexico. These taxa now are considered in the genus Lithobates (see Amphibian Species of the World website).
Ponce et al. (2022; Zootaxa 5129 [4]: 543–556) described Bolitoglossa cathyledecae sp. nov. based on three specimens (two juveniles and one adult) from the Cordillera de Talamanca in western Panama. This species differs from its congeners in coloration, finger and toe webbing, and a high number of maxillary teeth in relation to SVL. mtDNA sequences revealed an isolated phylogenetic position and relationships with four species groups, which form a subclade within the subgenus Eladinea.
Hernández-Jímenez et al. (2021; European Journal of Taxonomy 764:85–118) revised the genus Salvadora based on qualitative and quantitative morphological characters, and found the genus monophyletic and comprised of two species groups (the southern mexicana group with two species, and the northern grahamiae group with seven species). The authors elevated the taxon S. lineata to species level, with a distribution in the "United States from eastern Texas southward through northwestern Mexico in the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potisí, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Michoacán, Hidalgo, Puebla and northern Veracruz."
In a study on the Craugastor mexicanus series (Anura: Craugastoridae) Jameson et al. (2022; Herpetological Monographs 36: 1–48) the authors used geographic sampling in eastern Mexico and conducted a genetic phylogenetic analysis, which revealed two widespread species and evidence of multiple undescribed taxa. They discovered a larger bodied clade with a distribution restricted to higher elevations, and a smaller bodied clade restricted to low elevations. Additionally, they identified regions where multiple species co-occur. The authors tested for heterochrony and sexual dimorphism through the use of measurements and found evidence for paedomorphosis in small-bodied taxa. They also confirmed that tympanum and body size are sexually dimorphic traits in small and large bodied species, and used morphological variation in this group to describe six new species.
Flores-Villela et al. (2022; Zootaxa 5134 [2]: 286–296]) described a new species of Sceloporus from the S. torquatus species group, thus bringing the number of species in this group to nine. Sceloporus huichol sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the presence of relevant genetic and morphological data. Previously this species has been confused with S. melanogaster, to which it is closely related phylogenetically.
In a taxonomic revision of Leptophis ahaetula (Serpentes, Colubridae), Albuquerque and Fernandes (2022; Zootaxa 5153 [1]: 001–069) conducted a comprehensive study of the L. ahaetulla complex based on meristic, morphometric, color pattern, and hemipenial characters and elevated nine former subspecies to species status. For the purposes of this list, the distribution of one species (L. praestans) is in Mexico and Central America, another species (L. occidentalis) occurs in Central America and South America, and that of the nominate form (L. ahaetula) is restricted to South America.
Varela-Soto et al. (2022; Zootaxa 5178 [6]: 501–531) described a new species of hylid frog (Thalocohyla celeste) from the Tapir Valley Nature Reserve, along the Caribbean slope of Volcán Tenorio in Bijagua, Provincia de Alajuela, Costa Rica. Currently, this species is known only from the type locality.
Cázares-Hernández et al. (2022; Vertebrate Zoology 72: 937–950; DOI 10.3897/vz.72.e87275) described a new species of plethodontid salamander (Pseudoeurycea jaguar) from the Sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz, Mexico, based on morphological and genetic features, including coloration. This newly described salamander increases the number of plethodontid salamanders in the state of Veracruz to 43.
Kubicki et al. (2022; https://doi.org/10.11646/Zootaxa.5194.4.1) provided an updated taxonomic revision of the genus Nototriton in Costa Rica. These authors proposed a new subgenus (Taylorototriton) and described four new species of Nototriton (N. vereh, N. kenorum, N. lateomuscus, and N. maximo).
Palacios-Aguilar et al. (2022; Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 16(2) [Taxonomic Section: 120–132 (e320). described a new species of Tantilla (T. carolina) from coastal Guerrero, Mexico. This species is a member of the T. calamarina group, a clade than now contains seven species endemic to Mexico (T. calamarina, T. carolina, T. cascadae, T. ceboruca, T. coronadoi, T. deppei, and T. sertula), and one species (T. vermiformis) with a distribution that extends along the Pacific coastal plain from El Salvador to northwestern Costa Rica.
Barragán-Reséniz et al. (2022) described Geophis berillus sp. nov. based on three specimens from the Valle de Bravo region in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Estado de México, Mexico, in Herpetologica 78 (4): 268–276. This species differs from other members of this group in morphological characters and allopatry, and a phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial DNA (cyt-b) supports its inclusion in the G. sieboldi group.
De Queiroz (2022); Herpetological Review 53:418–420) made a case for changing the family name for the anoles from Dactyloidae to Anolidae, based on nomenclatural priority. Thus, the name Anolidae can be used for the 427 species currently recognized within the genus Anolis at the Reptile Database website (accessed 04 February 2023);otherwise, these names are placed in a series of genera by other authorities.
Costa et al. (2022; Zoologica Scripta, 00 1–19 https//doi.org/10.1111/zsc.12534) reassessed the systematics of Leptodeira emphasizing the South American species, and proposed a new systematic arrangement that involved the use of subspecies. In this regard, although several authors have considered L. polysticta as a valid species, in this paper it was treated as a subspecies of L. septentrionalis. Herein, however, our Taxonomic Board has chosen to retain L. polysticta as a valid species. These authors also reported L. annulata and L. ornata from Panama, so we added these taxa to our herpetofaunal list for Mesoamerica.
In a study on the phylogeography and taxonomy of Coleonyx elegans Gray 1845, Butler et al. (2023; Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 178 107632) elevated the subspecies "nemoralis" to species level (i.e, C. nemoralis).
In a molecular phylogeny of the Neotropical snail-eating snakes (Tribe Dipsadini Bonaparte 1838), Arteaga and Batista (2023; ZooKeys 1143: 1–49) provided morphological and phylogenetic support for four new species of Sibon Fitzinger 1826, and one species of Dipsas Laurenti 1768. Two of these species (Sibon irmelindicaprioae sp. nov. and Sibon canopy sp. nov.) occur in Panama. In addition, they elevated Sibon nebulatus leucomelas to species status (= Sibon leucomelas), a species not recorded from Mesoamerica that these authors recorded from Panama.
Ray et al. (2023; ZooKeys 1145:131–167) described a new species of Dipsas Laurenti 1768 (Dipsas aparatiritos sp. nov.) from central Panama, based on molecular analyses, hemipenial morphology, and external characters. These authors alse presented a key to the species of Dipsas currently known from Central America.
Recently, it was brought to our attention that three species of Eleutherodactylus (Anura: Eleutherodactylidae: subgenus Syrrhophus) had not been placed on our list (i.e., E. campi; E. marnocki; and E. petersi). The distribution of these three species is in the United States and Mexico. We apologize for this oversight.
Devitt et. al (2023; PeerJ DOI 10.7717/peerJ.14985) described two new species of Eleutherodactylus (Syrrhophus) from Western (E. jamesdixoni) and Central (E. humboldti) Mexico, based on combined evidence from DNA sequences, morphology, and male advertisement calls.
We were just made aware of a 2016 opinion in which the spelling of the family "Charinidae" Gray, 1849 (Reptilia, Squamata, Serpentes) was emended to "Charinaidae" to remove homonymy with Charinidae Quintero, 1986 (Arachnida, Amblypigi).
Grünwald et al. (2023; Herpetozoa 36: 95–111) described a new species of Eleutherodactylus (E. franzi) from the Pacific coasts of Guerrero and Sinaloa, Mexico, based on a combination of evidence from morphological, molecular and call analysis data.
Pérez-Ramos (2023; Revista de Zoología 35: 1–18) described two additional species of Rana (R. adleri and R. hillisi) from the Pacific coasts of Guerrero and Sinaloa, Mexico, although they noted that R. hillisi might occur in Guatemala. These taxa now are considered in the genus Lithobates (see above).
Villalobos-Juarez and García-Padilla (2023; Revista Latinoamericana de Herpetología, Vol. 6 No. 2) reported the first record of Sistrurus miliarius from Mexico, from the state of Tamualipas.
In a phylogenetic study unveiling underestimated species diversity within the Central American Coralsnake (Micrurus nigrocinctus), a species with a distribution extending from Mexico and throughout Central America, into Colombia, Jowers et al (2023; www.nature.com/scientificreports) refrained "from performing taxonomic changes until more data can be assessed for this complex of taxa." Their recovery of highly divergent clades supports the elevation of certain subspecies and the synonymization of others. Taxonomic changes, therefore, are expected in the future.
One of the persistent controversies in herpetological systematics involves the classification of anoline lizards. One school of thought holds that a milti-generic approach should be used (Nicholson et al. [2018] Zootaxa 4461: 573–586; the other school maintains that all mainland anoles should be placed in a single genus, i.e., Anolis (Poe et al. [2017] Systematic Biology 66: 663–697). Our position for the Mesoamerican Herpetology "Taxonomic List" has been to follow the approach of Nicholson et al., which places most Mesoamerican anoles in the genus Norops, with a few species allocated to the genus Dactyloa. This approach has been adopted by the papers published by the Mesoamerican Research Group, especially those that are part of the "Mexico Conservation Series," which have appeared since 2013 in the pages of Mesoamerican Herpetology and in Amphibian & Reptile Conservation. The members of the Taxonomic Board of Mesoamerican Herpetology unanimously agree with the multi-generic approach for anoline classification, and also the priority of the family Anilidae over Dactyloidae, as advocated by De Queiroz ([1922]; Herpetological Review 53: 418–420; see above). For these reasons, two recently described Anolis from western Costa Rica (A. robinsoni and A. riparius (Chaves et al. [2023] Zootaxa 5319 [2]: 249–262) are listed under the genus Norops.
Claus et al. (2024) PloS ONE 19 (1): e295230 <https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0295230> described the arboreal Abronia cunemica sp.nov., from the Northern Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico based on genomic and morphological evidence.
Arias et al. (2024); Amphibian & Reptile Conservation 17 (1 & 2) [General Section: 143–160 (e 327)] described Bolitoglossa bolanosi sp. nov., from a limited area in the highlands of southeastern Costa Rica.
Romero-Marcucci et al. (2024) Revista Científica Vida Natural 1 (2) enero–junio, reported the Oxyrhopus occipitalis from Panama based on a juvenile specimen and the photograph of another. These two records represent the first time this species has been recorded in Central America. The authors used pholidosis data to identify the specimen, by using a dichotomous key. The also noted that the taxonomic status of this species has been controversial for many years, and that taxonomic changes can be expected in the future.
In a major systematic revision of Bothriechis schlegelii (Berthold, 1846), Arteaga et al. (2024) Evolutionary Systematics (8: [1] 15–64) examined 400 museum specimens, 818 locality records, and 80 individuals for DNA sequence data. To resolve the paraphyly of B. schlegelii these authors described five new species (all from South America) and revalidated the names B. nigroadpersus, B. nitidus, and B. torvus. Because B. schlegellii (sensu stricto) primarily is a highland species endemic to Colombia, what were formerly regarded as B. schlegelii and B. supraciliaris from fell into a Central American clade, with the former species now known as B. nigroadspersus. The distribution of B. nigroadspersus extends throughout much of the Mesoamerican biome, from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, to northwestern Colombia along the border with Panama.
Recently, we discovered that three species were missing from our list: Anolis allisoni; Sphaerodactylus exsul; and Holcosus pulcher. Although some might consider the validity of the last species controversial, a study of this group by Meza-Lázaro and Nieto Montes de Oca (2015; Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society [175: 1, pp. 189–210]) noted the morphological distinctness, allopatry, and high genetic diversity of this taxon, suggesting that it is a distinct evolutionary species, and we agree. Subsequently, we discovered that Norops nelsoni, endemic to the Swan Islands in Honduras, also was missing from the list.
In a major paper by Streicher et al (2023; J. of Vertebrate Biology 72 [23072]:.1–23) involving species diversity in northern rain frogs of the genus Craugastor, based on molecular data the authors concluded that the C. campbelli and C. xucanebi complexes have been overestimated and that other taxa have been underestimated, notably within C. decoratus. Within the C. campbelli complex the authors synonymized C. nefrens and C. cyanochthebius with C. campbelli, and C. glaucus and C. stuarti with C. xucanebi. The authors also noted that the molecular data support multiple undescribed species, notably within C. decoratus, and showed how morphology-based species delimination can both underestimate and overestimate species richness in morphologically conservative groups.
Hernández-Austria et al. (2024; Zootaxa 5471[4] 433–450) described a new species of Eleutherodactylus (subgenus Syrrhophus) E. coelum sp. nov. from the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve in Tamaulipas, Mexico, based on morphological and molecular data. This species formerly was assigned to E. cystignathonoides. The authors also indicated that more lineages await description.
In a comprehensive study on species of the genus Thamnophis (Colubridae) from Mexico, especially on the distribution of snakes related to T. scalaris, Gründwald et al (2024: Herpetozoa 37: 157–179; DOI 10.3897/herpetozoa 37.e122213) described Thamnophis ahumadai sp. nov. from
the state of Jalisco, based on morpholigical characteristics and molecular data. The distribution of this species apparently is restricted to two mountain ranges at elevations above 2,100 m.
Arias et al. (2024; Zootaxa 5537 [2] 211–233) conducted a taxonomic reassessment of Bolitoglossa (subenus Eladinae), and based on phylogenetic analyses described two new species (B. silentium sp.nov. and B. chiquitica sp. nov.) from the Cordillera de Talamanca in the Costa Rica–Panama border region.
Chaves-Acuña et al. (2024); BioOne Complete, American Museum Novitates, 2014 [4016] 1–20) URL; http//doi.org/10.1206/4016.1 examined the phylogenetic relationships of two poorly-known hylid frogs from Honduras (Exerodonta catracha and Isthmohyla insolita) by using mitochondrial and nuclear genes to study their relationships. Their results showed that the species are sister taxa and nested among species of the genus Plectrohyla, and to resolve their polyphyly provisionally transferred both species to this genus (P. catracha and P. insolita). Historically, both species were described in the genus Hyla (H. catracha by Porras and Wilson in Copeia 1987: 2, 478–482, and H. insolita by McCranie, Wilson, and Williams in Copeia 1993, [4] 1057–1062. With the advent of molecular biology and phylogenetic systematics, numerous important studies on hylid frogs have appeared in the literature, and two important papers that reference the above species are Faivovich et al. (2005) Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. 294, 1–240, and Faivovich et al. (2018) South Amer. J. Herpetol. 13 1–32.
Atúnez et al. (2024, Zootaxa 5543 [1]: 097–110) described Liotyphlops pino sp. nov from the Caribbean coast of Honduras, based on a combination if external morphological charcteristics. Previously this genus was known only from Isthmian Central America and South America, and the type locality represents the northernmost record for this genus.
